Talented Tuesday & A Twilight Craft Box

Happy Tuesday everyone! Hope everyone's week has been going great so far!

Welcome back to Talented Tuesday, where you, my awesome readers, strut your stuff, and show us all the cool stuff you've made recently. From food, to furniture, to clothing, and so much more, you guys continue to amaze me with your fun projects.

Below is one of my weekend crafts- a wooden box made over in black, white, and red (with pink, since I had a very hard time finding just dark red printed scrapbook paper, after stopping at 3 stores). My oldest daughter is going to be 14 soon, which is enough of a shock to my system. Right now, she's very into Twilight, so I've been making Twilight inspired crafts.

I found a cubed wooden box at the local grocery store, of all places, on clearance for $2-something. Perfect! I snagged it without an immediate project in mind, but it only took a few days to come up with an idea. When I had my Girls Day Out with one of my good friends last Friday, I picked up some fun supplies- scrapbook paper (like, a ton!), Glitter mod podge (ooOOOOoOOoo...), ribbon, wooden 'knobs' (a 3 pack), lots of felt, 2 Distress Ink ink pads (black soot, which I am NOT in love with, and Fired Brick, which I do love), and much more.

Below is the project. I was overly zealous, and did not stop to take any before or during photos (that's becoming a bad habit...), so all you have is the finished project. I also didn't stop to paint the box first, but... that's not really something it -needed-, just thought it would be a nice touch.

What I Used:
5 Sheets of Scrapbook Paper (not a whole sheet needed of each, but I wanted a different pattern on each side)
1 Wooden Knob
Paint
Mod Podge
Distress Ink

  1. Measure and cut your paper. I used 5 different patterns. Because the lid has edges, I tore the paper in half for a more distressed look. In some instances, I had to tear more off to allow for where the wood meets.
  2. I used Black Soot Distress Ink on the red paper. I don't feel the black soot was up to the same quality as the Red Brick I also bought, or the Vintage Photo I have had for a few weeks. It got ALL OVER my hands, and it did not dry anywhere near as quickly- when I mod podged it to the wood, it smeared on the first one. You can kind of see it in the photo above, on the red swirly side of the box.
  3. I used Red Brick Distress Ink on the black & white sides, and it worked wonderfully. For the most part, I distressed all the sides of the paper (all paper used, actually), and a few smudges here and there in the middle of the papers.
  4. For the top section, I tore each of the four edges.
  5. I used Matte Mod Podge to attach the paper to the box. Once it was dry, some of the paper had an over hang on the corners, so I sanded down each corner and edge on the box, and some of the sections where the lid meets the box, so the paper wouldn't get in the way.
  6. For the top coat, I went with Glitter Mod Podge, so it sparkles, like the Vampire Wannabe's in Twilight. (can you tell, it's not my favorite book ever?) Glitter Mod Podge sparkles nicely, and I can't wait to use it in some Easter crafts.
  7. While this dried, I painted one of the wooden knobs. I first thought the red I had on hand would be too bright, so I added a few drops of black, but the color came out all together too rustic and brownish, so I wiped as much of it off as I could, then repainted it red. The dark color showed through in some spots, for a distressed look, so my mistake? Totally on purpose to distress it. Or so I'll tell anyone who asks. I also added some spots of black ink around it with a foam brush, for added depth to the color.
  8. When the knob dried, I used E6000 to glue it to the center of the lid, then I mod podged over it with Glitter Mod Podge.
And, really, that's all she wrote. It was an easy craft. Unfortunately, when I went back for more boxes, they were sold out. But, I did score a really cool, unfinished wooden jewelry box. Can't wait to try that one out!

I wish I had the Glitter Mod Podge on hand last week, when I made a springy heart in twilight colors. They match, but not totally, since I used Gold Shimmer, and used the Vintage Photo Distress Ink, which is brown. But, there you have it. I now have 2 Twilight inspired crafts for Raegan's birthday in April.

Hopefully, I'll come up with more before then!

Talented Tuesday & A Dollar Store Cloche

I have had a busy week, and as such, I was a slacker. I never commented on all of the posts last week, and I feel rotten about it! I did view them all as they were posted, and was very impressed once more with the talent people have!

This week, I am posting my craft today, instead of yesterday, so it'll be in with the Talented Tuesday bunch. I got this idea when I was at Dollar Tree, though it required 2 items from HobLob to finish them. Michaels, as an aside, did not have any type of wooden finials to use for this, so I wound up at HobLob.

Dollar Cloche

You'll Need:

1 Dollar Store marble candle plate ($1)
1 Dollar Store Candle Holder ($1 or less)
1 Wooden Finial (3 pack for $1.47, or $.49 each)
1 Wooden Ball Bead, with an opening the same size as the peg on the Finial (6 pack for $1.47, or $.245 each)
Paint (on hand)
E6000 Glue (on hand)
Sand Paper (on hand)

Cost: $2.74 (ish). This could probably be done cheaper, or more expensive, depending on the materials you use.

  1.  First, sand down the peg on the finial a bit. Insert it into the round bead, until it's as flush as it'll get. None of the finials fit completely flush to the beads I had, though they were both the same size. The gap didn't look bad, though.
  2. Sand any rough edges on the wood.
  3. Paint the wood- I choose Antique White to use, because it's not glaringly white, but is still a very nice neutral color, decor wise.
  4. Once the wood is completely dry, sand down the edges a bit, for a more weathered look.
  5. Glue the finished finial to the center of the bottom of the candle holder.
  6. Once it's dry, you are done!

For the marble candle disc I found, I preferred it upside down to right side up. All of them had little dark colored decorative stones on the up-side, and a lip for the candle. The bottoms are perfectly smooth, and rounded off, giving it a nice polished look for the cloche.

For Super Bowl Sunday, I picked up a cute little dozen mini cupcakes, which were OH SO SWEET. Seriously, I just wanted to stare at them! All soft, squishy, with such bright heart shaped sprinkles. I had some left today, and they were the perfect size to try out the cloche, so I did!

Talented Tuesday

Welcome to Talented Tuesday! I can't wait to see all the fun posts today, so be sure to link up, and check out the links below for some new inspiration!

I saw so many talented things last week, and loved them all. Here are just a few of my favorites, though.

Turn an entertainment center into a fun, unique kids kitchen! I've seen these done before, and they never cease to amaze me!

Turn an adult sized neck tie into a cute kids tie! This is great with Easter coming up.

I love pedestal vases, and they're really popular right now. But who wants to spend $20+ to buy one, when you can make them for around $2! I have several of these as well, and love them!

How romantic is this for Valentine's Day? I love how it looks against the black door, with the vivid red ribbon.

This wonderful frame is made from a clear acrylic photo frame, mod podge, scrapbook paper, a clip, and ribbon. These would be easy to make with on-hand items!

Talented Tuesday Links: January 19th

Everyone loves a good MckLinky party, right? Well, I've recently figured out how to find great link parties that blogs post each week, and have found that it helps generate a lot of new traffic for blogs, and generate the creative juices with all the cool projects people come up with!

So, in the spirit of all things crafty and bloggy, I'm joining the bandwagon. I'm going to have a weekly MckLinky party- Talented Tuesday. Show off your projects- whatever they may be! Share as many as you like! Just post the link back on your blog post, so others can find this MckLinky party as well!

Crafting Wishlist for 2010

In 2010, I want to expand my horizons, so to speak. Here are a few items on my wish list for this year.

1. An electric sander- I want to try my hand at refinishing furniture
2. A real power drill- I have a rotory tool, but it doesn't have the UMPH or size a drill can provide.
3. A staple gun- this goes hand in hand with number 1, though honestly, I only want to use it for doing fabric on wood, like turning a coffee table into a bench for the entrance way, etc.
4. Some wood- to finish off the back of a huge shelf we have, which is almost bare. It has 1 support beam, which makes the shelf sit 2 inches from the wall, so things fall off the back. I will then take the shelf hostage for my craft area storage.
5. A better storage system- this goes hand in hand with number 4, I suppose.
6. More mod podge- looove it!
7. A million dollars- to fund the above, and more.

Specifically, I want to turn a coffee table into a bench for the back door. I've been looking for a bench for 2 years with no luck. Now, I'm skipping the whole bench idea, and making one, since old coffee tables are pretty easy and cheap to come by. It want to sand it down, paint it, add foam to the top, and cover the foam with a nice fabric. This will serve to let the kids have a place to sit when they take shoes off, and give them a place to stash said shoes under it.

We have a bookshelf I found at Goodwill when we moved into our house. We needed movie storage badly. It's about 6 feet long, and probably 5 feet tall. The back is wide open, except one board running from top to bottom right in the middle. It's a thick board, and means the shelf sits an inch or two away from the wall. I want to remove that, and affix plywood to give it a full back, then sand down and paint the entire shelving unit.

I have 2 dressers in our back room that we use for storage. Both are such fantastic units, though, and rather old. Both would look fabulous in my bedroom, when I get it done. But, both have layers and layers of paint on them. So, they need to be sanded down, primed, and painted. I tried painting one of them, but the paint bubbled up. In retrospect, I didn't think to sand down the top where it has a laminate like finish. I have some cool scrapbook paper, so I want to mod podge the tops of both dressers, to make them match.

I want to get a bed frame for my bed. Yes, our bed is on the floor. We had a frame for it. Three years ago, we relocated from up north to down here. The night we moved in, we didn't set the frame up, we just dumped the mattress and box frames on the floor. It was a lot more comfortable. We kept it that way. Now? It feels a little like a college kid's first apartment.

I have never repainted our bedroom. It was high on the priority list when we moved in, but still has never been done. I am NOT good with home projects. It needs paint. It's pistachio green. The closet doors have other children's hand and feet prints painted on them. In hot pink, teal, and yellow. Clashes horribly with the walls, but also, it's kind of creepy.

So, for the bedroom-
  • Empty the room, pitch 50% of the stuff "stored" (but really just stashed) in ther.
  • Paint the room dove gray or tan. Not sure which yet. Paint the master bath the same color.
  • Get a bed frame, use it. Put on the lovely bed set.
  • Make a scrapbook paper headboard.
  • Swap out the old & busted dressers, and put in the new hotness dressers.
  • Organize the closets much better.
  • Decorate the room with candles, picture frames, etc.
  • Sit back, and bask in your awesomeness.
These are my goals. I hope to have that room done by December 31st, 2010.

What are your goals for 2010? Add your list of projects for 2010, or projects you completed in 2009 in the MckLinky below, and add the code below to your post!
